Q: My 2 1/2 year old still does not sleep through the night. She will wake 2-3 times a night, get out of her bed and come to our room and wake us up. It then takes about 20-30 minutes to get her back to sleep. This is every night. We have tried putting a gate in her door, she just screams and then throws up. She slept well over the summer, but since Sept. has begun this routine. She is learning to potty train, but not at night. Help! We are at our wits end!

A: Your little one sounds like he is entering the stage when he is starting to give up his nap.  The problem is that he probably still really needs a nap, but it is interfering with him falling asleep at his usual bedtime.  For now, stick with continuing to put him down every day for a nap.  He may or may not sleep, but rest time is good for everybody.  On days that he doesn’t fall asleep, move his bedtime much earlier.  On days that he does take a nap, you may need to push his bedtime back a bit later.
