It isn't about how you became a mom, or what unforeseen challenges you encounter along the journey called motherhood. You're a mom, no matter what.
That's the message behind a new video from Tylenol in honor of Mother's Day. The video was created as a part of the brand's #HowWeFamily campaign, celebrating the diverse people that make up today's modern families.
In the video, we meet different kinds of moms, from actress Lucy Liu, who says she welcomed her baby via surrogate, to a single mom, to one whose son is transitioning, to a mom who is married to another mom, to a mom whose husband's religion differs from hers.
Some mamas we hear from always knew they wanted to have children; others didn't see kids in their future. The point is, every mom and every family is different, and that part doesn't matter. What matters is the love you give your child.
"There's so much discussion about what's acceptable, what's not acceptable," Liu says. "That word shouldn't even play in the dynamic of family."
It's the things moms have in common that we should focus on. Like how we all want what's best for our kids, and how much we love them no matter how old they are. How our kids are, as one mom puts it, our everything.
And how just thinking or talking about how deeply we love our children makes us all cry. Like, ugly cry.
I love this video because it celebrates every mom, and it encourages us to think about what we share, instead of what separates us. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could focus on our commonalities every day, and not just on Mother's Day?
