The travel site looked at 53 of the largest cities in the U.S. and ranked them based on 16 key metrics across three broad categories: kid-friendly recreation, city profile, and affordability. Yup, from how many playgrounds one can find in a particular locale, to the family-friendly attractions, dining, and lodging each offers, it seems there's no shortage of urban spots where your brood can have a blast this summer and avoid the boredom that can often accompany the typical beach vacation.
Here are the top five cities to visit with kids this year:
1. San Diego
Yeah! My childhood home came in at #1 according to RewardExpert's analysis! It's no surprise this sun-drenched city with loads of attractions kids love is a top destination for families this year. Hit Legoland, Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, or the Wild Animal Park, then relax on the beach and enjoy the sun. Something for everyone can be found here!
2. San Francisco
The views alone are enough to entice folks of any age to visit this Northern California city. From the giant and free Golden Gate Park to the science museum, Exploratorium, chocolate and shopping mecca Ghiradelli Square, and Lombard Street, the steepest, curviest residential lane you'll ever see, there is no shortage of family fun in SF. Don't forget to visit the sea lions at Pier 39!
This Oregon city ranked #3 on RewardExpert's list, in large part because it's easy to navigate via public transit, bike, or on foot. One spot you can't miss: Playdate PDX, a 7,500-square-foot indoor play place for little ones. Another must-see is Washington Park, home of the biggest playground in the city. Psst: Portland is also a great place for parents to sample delicious coffee and beer!
Head south to this Georgia city that boasts affordable dining and lodging as well as the unforgettable Stone Mountain Park. Kids will also love the Children's Museum of Atlanta, among many other family-friendly indoor and outdoor activities.
5. Washington, D.C.
Our nation's capital rounds out the top five cities to visit with your children in 2017. Consider that D.C. is home to the most museums per capita in the country. You can also take in many free monuments, from the Washington to the Lincoln, and stroll on the National Mall, or take a walk over to the White House.
But Don't Forget...
This Florida city also ranked high in the review based on factors like kid-friendly hotels and a beautiful climate.
A little further south, enjoy 16 amusement parks like Jungle Island in just one warm-weather city.
Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver, and Honolulu are also very family-friendly destinations, according to RewardExpert. So what are you waiting for? Start planning that family vacation!
