The house flipping experts transformed the Target House at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital into a home away from home for children battling cancer.
Chip and Joanna Gaines won over the hearts of America by uplifting and giving back to their home community of Waco, Texas. Now the power-couple is taking that same innovation to new heights with their most impactful fixer upper to date—the Target House at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The Target House (located in Memphis, Tennessee) is a free, long-term housing facility for children battling life-threatening diseases at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. After partnering up with Target to create their Hearth & Hand with Magnolia line of interior decor, Chip and Joanna felt that their services would come in handy at the Target House. The duo completely remodeled the Target House dining room, taking it from a stuffy cafeteria and transforming it into a warm, farm-house style living space. Now the families can escape the stresses of everyday life and come to the Target House dining room to enjoy a good meal in a homey atmosphere.
“I really believe home is the most important place on earth, and while we are hopeful those families will not have to stay there for long, I wanted to make the space feel as comfortable as possible for them while they are there,” Joanna told People. “When they go there to eat and to gather, I wanted them to feel like there’s still that sense of home away from home.”
Of course, Chip and Joanna love a big unveiling—after the duo completed the Target house dining room, they hosted a special celebration and hung out with the children who will be taking comfort in the new space. "We were able to meet many of the children currently undergoing treatment, along with their families,” Joanna told People. “It was just an incredible honor that we’ll never forget.”
Fixer Upper fans know Chip's long red hair has been getting a little out of hand—which is why he started the #OperationHaircut campaign. Over the span of four days, fans came together to donate money towards St. Judes. The kid-at-heart contractor seemed to have a blast with the children while raising over $230,000.
Chip and Joanna have created an incredible place for the children of St. Jude and their families to come together as they have been uprooted from their homes. Not only are the couple a presence of positivity that seems to rub off on everyone they meet, but they are inspiring many to give back to the community! We can't wait to see what plans Chip and Joanna have up their sleeves next.
