Make sure you check your fridge and freezer before the long weekend! No ground beef is included in the recall, but a variety of steaks and ribs are.

Before you start on your Memorial Day cooking, make sure you double-check any raw beef you’ve recently purchased. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection service just announced a recall of more than 62,000 pounds of raw beef that may have been contaminated with E. coli.

The beef products included in the recall were produced on April 19, 2019, at the Aurora Packing Company in North Aurora, Illinois. A variety of beef products are being recalled, including brisket, short ribs, and ribeye steaks—you can see a full list of the products included on the USDA’s website.

Right now, there hasn’t been any information released about where the beef products were sold, but they were shipped and distributed nationwide. One way to identify beef included in the recall is by looking at the USDA mark of inspection—each of the recalled products has the establishment number “EST. 788” inside the mark (find the mark of inspection by looking for a circular stamp on the outside of the packaging).

Luckily, no illnesses have been reported yet, but if you’re worried you might’ve gotten sick from any recalled food, you should contact your doctor or  healthcare provider right away. E. coli can be potentially deadly and causes nasty symptoms like dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms can appear anywhere from two to eight days after you’re exposed to the bacterium.

Make sure you check your fridge and freezer for all the products on the USDA’s recall list. If you have any of them in your kitchen, don’t cook with them—instead, throw them out or return them to the store for a refund.
