Arizona-based JBS Tolleson has launched a recall of 6.5 million pounds of beef that may be contaminated with salmonella. At least 57 people in 16 states have reported becoming ill, according to the USDA.
You’ll want to check your freezer for the products, which are raw, non-intact beef items including ground beef, packaged from July 26 to September 7, 2018, shipped nationwide and according to CNN, sold under brands including Walmart, Showcase, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Showcase/Walmart and JBS Generic. Look for the USDA inspection mark “EST. 267,” which is printed on the recalled products. The USDA has also published a list of the products and their labels, which include hundreds, on the recall list, and JBS Tolleson has set up a consumer hotline at (800)727-2333 for anyone with questions.
What are the signs and symptoms of salmonella infection?
Salmonella infection is one of the most common foodborne illness. Most signs of salmonella infection or salmonellosis occur within 72 hours of consuming the contaminated food. Symptoms include G.I. issues such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps and vomiting as well as fever. The majority of people with a salmonella infection will recover on their own within 4 to 7 days but sometimes symptoms are so severe patients require antibiotics and/or hospitalization. The risk of more serious symptoms increases for older adults, children and anyone with weakened immune systems. When Will It Be Over?
This hasn’t been an easy year for home cooks. Salmonella and other foodborne illness such as E. coli have led to a number of recalls this year including a beef recall by Cargill Meat Solutions this past September, Ritz crackers in the summer, eggs this past spring, and one of the largest recalls of romaine lettuce in recent history.
