Peel the potatoes; then cut into 1-inch chunks. Place the potato chunks and whole garlic in a large pot with enough salted water to cover. Cover the pot and bring to boiling. Reduce the heat; simmer for 15 minutes or until the potato chunks are knife-tender. Drain the potatoes and garlic in a colander. Transfer to a large bowl.
Add the half-and-half, butter, salt, pepper and nutmeg to the potatoes in the bowl. Using a potato masher, mash the potatoes coarsely, crushing the garlic into the potatoes so it is evenly mixed throughout. Makes 8 servings.
