Single-crust Pie Pastry

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces and chilled
  • 1/4 cup solid vegetable shortening, cut into pieces and chilled
  • 3 tablespoons cold water

Make It

1. Mix flour and salt in bowl.

2. With pastry blender or finger-tips, rub butter and shortening into flour mixture until texture of coarse meal.

3. Gradually add water, tossing with fork, until mixture begins to mass together. Shape into ball.

4. Flatten into disk. Cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until well chilled, about 30 minutes. Makes enough for 1-crust pie.
