Basic Pastry
Yield: 2 pie crusts Prep 15 mins Chill 30 mins


  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces and chilled
  • 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening, cut into pieces and chilled
  • 6 tablespoons cold water

Make It

1. Mix flour and salt in bowl.

2. With pastry blender or finger-tips, rub butter and shortening into flour mixture until texture of coarse meal.

3. Gradually add water, tossing with fork, until mixture begins to mass together.

4. Divide dough in half; shape and flatten into disks. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until well chilled, about 30 minutes.
