Spiced Sugar Cookies
Yield: 3-1/2 dozen Prep 30 mins Chill 1 hr Bake 375°F 10 mins per batch

  • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening, at room temperature
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Coarse sugar crystals

Make It

1. In medium bowl, with electric mixer on medium, beat shortening and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in egg and molasses.

2. In large bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, spices, and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to shortening mixture, blending well. Chill dough, covered, for 1 hour.

3. Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly grease two baking sheets. Roll level tablespoonfuls of dough into balls, dip one side of each into sugar crystals, and arrange -- sugared side up -- about 3 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, until set. Transfer to wire racks; cool completely.
