Ingredients

Cake:
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter or margarine, at room temperature
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar
Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter or margarine, at room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup milk mixed with 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar

Make It

1. Heat oven to 350 degree F. Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking pan.

Cake:

2. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until smooth, about 2 minutes. Beat in eggs and cocoa powder. On low speed, beat in flour, baking soda, water and milk until combined. Beat for 1 minute on medium-high speed.

3. Pour into prepared pan and bake at 350 degree F for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven; cool on a wire rack.

Frosting:

4. In a medium-size bowl, beat together butter and cocoa powder. Add confectioners sugar and milk alternately, beating on medium speed until it reaches a good spreading consistency. Beat in vanilla extract.

5. Frost top of cake and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes for frosting to firm up.

6. Makes 16 servings.
