Staying Healthy Toy and Product Recall Finder Banana Boat Sunscreen Recalled Due to Cancer Risk Edgewell Personal Care has issued a voluntary recall of Banana Boat sunscreen after benzene, a known carcinogen, was found in several product samples. By Kimberly Zapata Published on August 1, 2022 Share Tweet Pin Email Photo: Walmart While sunscreen is usually worn to prevent cancer, one popular brand is being recalled because it may lead to an increased risk of it. Some samples of Banana Boat Hair and Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 contained trace levels of benzene, a classified carcinogen. As a result, Edgewell Personal Care, the maker of Banana Boat products, is issuing a nationwide recall of the sunscreen spray. The Best Sunscreens for Kids in 2022 "An internal review found that some samples of the product contained trace levels of benzene," says a July 29 press release from Edgewell. "While benzene is not an ingredient in any Banana Boat products, the review showed that unexpected levels of benzene came from the propellant that sprays the product out of the can." This means consumers could be exposed to benzene by inhalation of the product during application, as well as through the skin. Benzene has been linked to leukemia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and also to blood disorders and blood cancer of the bone marrow. It's important to note the recall is voluntary. To date, no injuries, illnesses, or deaths have been reported—nor are any adverse reactions expected. "Benzene is ubiquitous in the environment," the Edgewell press release continues. "Humans around the world have daily exposures to it indoors and outdoors from multiple sources. Daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences according to an independent health assessment using established exposure modeling guidelines." Still, consumers should stop using the affected products, which include those with lot code 20016AF and an expiration date of December 2022; those with lot code 20084BF and an expiration date of February 2023; and/or those with lot code 21139AF, which expires in April 2024.
