The friction between the wall and the pressure-mounted safety gate is insufficient to hold the gate in its intended position, posing a fall hazard. In addition, the lower metal bar can be a tripping hazard. Eighteen incidents have been reported worldwide, including three where children were injured from falling down stairs.
This recall includes approximately 58,000 units in the U.S. and 17,000 in Canada. The safety gates are white, made of steel and plastic, and measure about 29 inches high with an adjustable width from about 29 inches to 34 inches.
IKEA stores nationwide and online at ikea-usa.com from 08/95 through 02/2015 for about $35.
Consumers should stop using the safety gate and return it to any IKEA store for a full refund. Any PATRULL KLAMMA/SMIDIG safety gate extensions may also be returned for a full refund. Those who want to keep their PATRULL KLAMMA or SMIDIG safety gate for limited use in a doorway between rooms or at the bottom of a staircase can contact IKEA to receive free updated user instructions and new adhesive warning labels to put on their safety gate.
