Q: Is it safe to get a fetal portrait and video taken?

A: It's safe to have an ultrasound when it's performed in your obstetrician's office. But the keepsake fetal portrait and video industry is largely unregulated, so there's concern that untrained videographers may be using the equipment inappropriately. Doctors can't be certain what prolonged ultrasound exposure might do to the fetus, so if you want pictures to share with your family and friends, your best bet is to get printouts of the regular and 3-D ultrasounds done in your doctor's office. Take a DVD to your checkup, and you might get a video. --Norine Dworkin-McDaniel
