Your baby weighs just a couple of ounces now, so why have you gained 4 pounds -- or more? Simple: Your body needs to make a whole lot of changes to support that tiny speck of a baby, and some of those changes mean extra weight for you. For example, the amount of blood pumping through your veins increases by 40 percent while you're pregnant and eventually contributes about 4 pounds to your weight. Also, your baby is surrounded by up to 2 pounds of amniotic fluid, and your breasts are getting larger and heavier as they prepare for breastfeeding.

If you're gaining too much weight, eat less and up your exercise. Don't go on a diet, though -- if you starve yourself, you're starving your baby.
