The Right Weight Gain

Have you gained a safe amount of weight? Find out what you can do to make sure you're at your healthiest weight for your pregnancy.

In week 24, the recommended weight gain to date for an ordinary pregnancy in a normal-weight woman is about 14-16 pounds. If you've gained a lot more than that, review what you're eating and how much exercise you're getting. Now is not the time to go on a diet. However, cutting out junk food and increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables makes sense.

Also, if you've slacked off on your exercise regimen, now is a good time to get moving again. Buy a pedometer and start walking. Studies show that women who wear pedometers walk 1 mile per day more than those who don't wear these devices.

If you've gained a lot of weight, forgive yourself and then focus on what you can do from this point onward. Resolve to eat smarter and exercise to keep your weight gain on track for the rest of your pregnancy.
