Pregnancy My Pregnant Body Is It Safe? Douching While Pregnant Dr. Elizabeth Pryor answers the question, Is it safe to douche when you're pregnant? By Elizabeth Pryor MD, FACOG Published on October 3, 2005 Share Tweet Pin Email Photo: Kaarsten/shutterstock.com Question Sometimes I'll notice an odor or discharge from my vagina. Is it safe to douche when I'm pregnant? Answer Simply stated, no. Douching can change the normal bacteria levels that you have in your vagina. This can aggravate yeast infections and irritate the vagina. In fact, I don't encourage douching in any of my patients because it's simply not necessary. Your vagina cleanses itself naturally by secreting fluids that drain and flush out dead cells, bacteria, and semen. If you're concerned about unusual discharge or odor, then see your doctor for an examination. The information on this Web site is designed for educational purposes only.
