How do I stop worrying about getting fatter during pregnancy?
Q: I'm happy and excited to be pregnant (I'm 15 weeks and 6 days along), but I'm so used to being skinny. I just feel gross about the weight I have gained and about gaining more weight as the pregnancy goes along. I don't know if I'm just scared that I won't get back to my regular weight after birth or what. How do I get over not liking being bigger, even though it's normal ?
A: You're definitely not alone feeling the way you do! Gaining weight during pregnancy is normal. The average size of a newborn baby is 7 1/2 pounds, and the placenta weighs about 1-2 pounds. Amniotic fluid, your uterus, breast tissue, blood, and fluids in maternal tissue all add weight that's not "fat." The general recommendation is to gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy, depending on your pre-pregnancy weight and what your particular doctor or midwife recommends for you.
Even though you will gain additional weight during pregnancy, you may be able to lose it fairly quickly after giving birth.
