Birth Stories: "My Labor Stopped"

Carrie wanted to have a vaginal birth after being induced, but after a series of events, had to change plans. Her unplanned c-section may have been unexpected but ultimately had the perfect ending.

-You know, the nurse and doctor left the room. My husband and I talked it through. And, oh, I was definitely-- I was crying. I was upset, but I also knew that our-- you know, we wanted the baby to come safely and we wanted a healthy baby and the best way to do it at that time was the C-section. I was overdue. I was 41 weeks and 5 days when I was induced, so I was a scheduled induction. We called at 5 p.m. and they said to arrive at 7 and there was actually a horrible traffic. We didn't get there until nearly 8. I wasn't dilated or phased at all. And so, we had two rounds of Cervidil. The first round was overnight. The second round, I was phased enough to start Pitocin. Pitocin is a medication that starts the contractions. By about 4 in the afternoon, my water had broken and I dilated 6 cm. I wanted to try a vaginal birth. I wanted-- I wanted to feel it to try it. So, they were actually really hopeful that maybe I would be able to have a natural or a vaginal birth because I had progressed so far so quickly to 6 cm from 1. But after that, everything stopped. We went another 4 hours and it was 8 p.m. and that I hadn't progressed at all. And the baby hadn't descended at all. That's when we started talking about the C-section. Once I was in the hospital and you're kind of going for gold, like that's your gold, to have the vaginal birth, to have the baby, I think I was more upset because I was disappointed that I wasn't able to do it rather than being afraid of the C-section at all. I wasn't afraid of having C-section. From the time we said yes, let's do the C-section, I was in the operating room in like 20 minutes. The C-season, I mean I don't think it probably took 15 minutes. Claire was born on Tuesday, October 8th, at 8:55 p.m. My recovery was really easy and I felt pretty good. We made the right decision. I could have been in pain for 12 more hours or I could have had the baby.
