Birth Stories: Emergency C-section

For Pamela, a routine doctor's appointment turned into an emergency c-section when the doctor found that her baby's heart was skipping beats. Watch her describe the whirlwind of events that led up to the birth of her son.

-I was really, really scared. Really scared, but was so shocked I couldn't even ask questions. My husband's on the phone calling the family saying it's happening now, it's happening now. And next thing you know I was in the surgical room. I got on the bed at 10:56 and he came out at 11:32. Emergency C-section. I wasn't ready for him. I'm up there in age. I wasn't expecting to be pregnant. I had no morning sickness, no warnings, nothing. I just-- I found out I was pregnant at 5 months so the whole thing happened so fast, my pregnancy and then the delivery. It was unbelievable. I went in for a routine ultrasound. And when I went in, the specialist said that his heart was skipping beats, so they wanted to hurry up and do the ultrasound. They got in there and what they thought was amniotic fluid was actually my cord twisting. He said let's go to labor and delivery for more monitoring. And when I got there, there was a bunch of whispering. You know, my husband was trying to listen in and they said it's time. We got to take him out. When he came out the cord was knotted in two spots. So, he came out just in time. It kinda makes me wonder like what if I didn't make it to that appointment that day, you know; what if I waited and saw my doctor out that following Friday? Everything happened so fast. I couldn't have that moment they talk about, that bonding moment like, oh my god, this is my son, I'm a mom, I'm his mom. He was with us for two hours and then he went to NICU for three days. My first moment was probably the third day in NICU. But after he got out of NICU, he didn't leave my side. We were in the hospital for five nights. You can't be prepared. Don't get upset with yourself. Nothing will prepare you for that moment. Nothing. But don't freak out. It's worth it. Definitely worth it.
