Is there a safe way to treat back pain during pregnancy?

Q: I am 27-weeks-pregnant, and I am having back pain. The only thing that has helped has been massage but now even massage doesn't work. I've tried to lay on a hot water bottle, but that's not helping much either. Any other ideas?

A: Back pain in pregnancy can be from normal relaxation of joints that occurs from a hormone secreted call "relaxin" but often muscles may spasm or nerves may get pinched during this process. Some safe modalities in pregnancy in addition ot massage and localized heat are physical therapy, chiropractic care with a skilled Chiropractor trained to help pregnany women, and acupuncture. Medications to help with muscle spasms can also be prescribed by your doctor.
