Summer Hair Care

Follow these four tips to ensure a more manageable mane:

*Get a trim every six weeks. Damaged hair loves frizz, so keep split ends at bay by snipping ends frequently.

*Let your hair dry naturally to cut back on heat damage. When you want a super-sleek style, prep locks with a thermal protector before blow-drying, straightening, or curling.

*Hands off! Once hair is dry, keep touching to a minimum.

*On days when you don't have time to fight the frizz, pull hair back into a ponytail, braid, or low bun for an easy, controlled look.

Fine Hair: In the Shower

Wash with a lightweight shampoo and conditioner and don't work the conditioner into your scalp -- apply just from mid-strand to ends. We love: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Sheer Shampoo and Conditioner, $4 each.

To add volume and control, spritz a light conditioning spray through damp hair. We love: Alterna Hemp Volumizing Spray Leave-In Conditioner, $14.

Stylist Tip

To keep hair smooth, blow-dry from roots to ends with the airflow pointing down. Make sure your hair is completely dry before going out since damp hair quickly becomes frizzy.

Wavy Hair: In the Shower

Moisture is what gives your hair its bounce and body, so go for a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. We love: Infusium 23 Frizzologie Shampoo and Conditioner, $6 each.

For all-day control, apply a nickel-size amount of frizz-fighting cream onto middle and ends of damp hair. Scrunch hair, then air-dry. We love: Aussie Catch the Wave Taming Milk, $3.

Stylist Tip

Try this trick to lock in moisture: After shampooing, apply your conditioner throughout damp hair, wrap it up into a shower cap, and blast with a blow-dryer. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse.

Curly Hair: In the Shower

Curly hair needs extra nurturing, so start off with an ultra-conditioning shampoo and conditioner like Suave Professionals Healthy Curls Shampoo and Conditioner, $2 each. Follow with a deep-treatment mask at least once a week. We love: Ouidad Deep Treatment, $30.

Curly Hair: Post Shower

Run a gel through damp hair to smooth the cuticle and add weight to unruly strands. Use fingers to distribute evenly. We love: L'Oreal New Studio Tightly Wound Curl Boosting Curl Spray Gel, $5.

Stylist Tip

Drying hair with a towel can damage the cuticle and cause frizz. Instead, use an old soft T-shirt and gently squeeze out moisture, section by section.

Colored Hair: In the Shower

It's important to use a rich conditioner daily to nourish the damaged cuticle. Stick to a shampoo and conditioner formulated for color-treated hair. We love: Sunsilk Beyond Brunette and Blonde Bombshell shampoos and conditioners, $5 each.

Colored Hair: Post Shower

To help combat the damaging effects of chemical processing, use a leave-in conditioner on wet hair. We love: Dove Advanced Color Care Leave-In Luminizing or Glossing Mist, $6 each.

Stylist Tip

Protect your color at the beach or poolside by slathering hair with conditioner (don't rinse!), styling it into a bun, and wearing a hat.
