The holidays are all about the extras—oodles of presents for your kiddos, a feast of sweets, and twinkly lights galore. You deserve to sparkle, too, so we asked celebrity makeup artist and mom of three Mally Roncal to explain how you can wear this season’s metallic makeup trend. Get ready to shine.
New multihued highlighters are a festive way to add some super-flattering color to your skin.
Sweep one onto the high points of your face (browbones, the bridge of your nose, cheekbones) with a fan brush, says Roncal. We like Becca Light Chaser Highlighter in Rose Quartz Flashes Seashell ($34); it shifts between blush and hot pink, which is gorgeous on most skin tones. Complement the look with a shimmery cream eyeshadow like MAC Cosmetics Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Vintage Selection ($22) and a pink lip balm, like Vaseline Lip Therapy Rosy Lips ($2).
Yes, you can rock metallic lips without looking like you stepped out of the ’90s.
The key: Choose a copper shade with a shimmer finish (rather than a chunky glitter or frost), like Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Roach ($17). Since lips are the focus, keep your face makeup more refined. Smashbox Studio Skin Shaping Foundation Stick ($42) provides two products in one—swipe the foundation shade all over your face and the darker shade along your hairline, under cheekbones, and along your jawline to define. Blend with a makeup sponge. Then dust a champagne highlighter on cheekbones and lips. Roncal considers Mally Beauty Glowing Goddess Luminizer ($29) a staple in her kit.
Give your face a gorgeous shimmer with a trim of seasonal color.
“The beauty of metallic is that it’s actually a neutral, so it pairs well with bold purple shades,” says Roncal. Start by sweeping a silver glitter liquid shadow, like Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow in Diamond Dust ($24) over the lid. Once it dries, line the upper lashline with a violet eyeliner (we used Ardell Beauty Wanna Get Lucky Gel Liner in Purple Royal, $9). Now, add a silver beam to your cheekbones with Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Diamond Dust ($26). Finish with a high-shine nude lip gloss, such as Maybelline New York Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer in Unreal ($8).
Create a smoky eye using gold for the pop on the lid.
“This is a simple way to wear metallic because you don’t have to be precise in your application,” says Roncal. Brush a shimmery gold shadow from lashline to crease, add a black shadow right along the lashline, and blend. FLOWER Shimmer & Shade Eyeshadow Palette in Intense Natural ($16) has everything you need. Since your eye makeup is heavy, Roncal suggests pairing with soft pink lips. Try Mary Kay Gel Semi-Shine Lipstick in Raspberry Ice ($18).
