Q: When do kids start experiencing oily skin and acne?

A: These common hygiene issues are directly related to the hormonal changes kids experience as they approach puberty. During the preteen years (around 8 for girls and 9 for boys) kids' sweat glands start to become more active and the sebaceous glands in the skin begin pumping out more oil, which leaves the skin and scalp greasier and can cause some acne to crop up. At this point your child will need to adjust his hygiene routine to accommodate his changing body. If you notice your child looking (and smelling) a little grimier than usual, encourage him to bathe more often, wash his hair daily, and start using an anti-acne facial cleanser twice a day if necessary.
