Case in point: King Cake Snob’s recent absurd run-in with Facebook’s censors.
The Times-Picayune reports that it all began when King Cake Snob, a website dedicated to rating the ring-shaped cakes of the same name, attempted to pay Facebook to promote a post celebrating the approach of Mardi Gras. The post exclaimed “We’re Back, Baby” along with a photo of plastic king cake babies—the good luck charm found inside most king cakes. Seems straightforward enough, right?
King Cake Snob spokeswoman Beth Harris told the Times-Picayune that a day later they received an email from Facebook rejecting their request for a paid boost, because the post included “an image or video depicting excessive skin or nudity, which includes medical diagrams depicting external organs of reproduction, breasts or butt. This kind of material is sensitive in nature."
Harris said they were “shocked” and reached out to Facebook to explain that the “excessive skin” was plastic and that their intentions were innocent. Facebook, however, was not amused.
"Obviously the folks at Facebook have never tasted the sweet deliciousness of a traditional or filled king cake,” Jay Connaughton, managing partner of Innovative Advertising, the creators of King Cake Snob, said in a release. “If they had, they would understand the deep passion that runs in Louisiana for king cakes of all varieties, and the little babies that live inside them."
Speaking with the Times-Picayune, Harris expressed a similar sentiment.
“If they don’t get Mardi Gras, I don’t think we can explain it to them,” she concluded.
Somebody better send them a king cake, stat!
