Special memories of Mother's Day with our moms, and our Mother's Days as mothers.

Big Sister Holding Baby on Mom's Lap

New Mom Stories

Whether we're moms, daughters, grandmothers, or all of the above, Mother's Day holds a special place in our hearts. Sure, birthdays are a chance to show our appreciation, but Mother's Day is something different altogether. It's about loving mom for mothering us. It's about loving mom for disciplining us, pushing us, and loving us. It's about loving your children because they are yours. It's about celebrating the very idea of motherhood. In honor of that, we've compiled some comments from our community -- their favorite memories of Mother's Days past and present. Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day Baby

I gave birth to my daughter on Mother's Day. My due date was May 23, but for my entire pregnancy my own mother told me I was having a Mother's Day baby. Around 11:30 p.m. the night before my water broke. My husband and I checked in to the hospital at 12:01 a.m. on Mother's Day. My beautiful baby girl entered the world at 2:51 p.m. on Mother's Day, May 12, 2002. She was 7 pounds, 3 ounces, 19 3/4 inches long, with a full head of dark hair. Mother knows best -- chalk one up for my mom. And what a gift to give her, her first granddaughter -- on Mother's Day. --Gracie'sMom

Stomach Aches and Pearls

On Mother's Day my husband woke me up early in the morning, complaining of stomach aches. He said he wanted some warm milk to calm his stomach. Being the lovely wife I am, I proceeded down the stairs and noticed a black box. In it was a pearl necklace, earrings, and bracelet. I was so excited. A few steps down was a Mother's Day card. And a few steps further down was a pair of car keys. I went into the garage and saw a new pearl 2003 Kia Optima! --Anonymous

Finger Paints and Poems

My favorite Mother's Day memory was of my very first Mother's Day as a new mom. I came home from work and my mom was standing in the doorway smiling. She was holding my 9-month-old son. He handed me a card that my mom had picked out. It had bunnies on the front, and on the inside was this beautiful poem, "Cuddle Time with Mommy." Also my son's handprints were on the insert. It was my first and best Mother's Day present ever! --DoodleBugzMama

The Gift of Gab

My favorite Mother's Day was my first. We went out to eat and the restaurant was giving all the mothers a rose. When we got home it was time for my daughter's feeding. She was sitting in my lap and we were playing. Then, out of nowhere see says her first words, "Mamma Dadda Babba." I just repeated, "Ohmigod! Ohmigod! She said her first words and on Mother's Day!" At least "Mamma" came out first. --hopeful4u_lil1

Otherwise Engaged

My first Mother's Day was nice, but my second was wonderful! I don't have a real engagement ring, and technically my husband didn't really propose; it's a long story. But anyway, on my second Mother's Day we took our son to the grandparents. (We have a mommy breakfast out.) Then hubby said that we left something at home. Being a super mom (like we all are) I said "No way. I remembered everything." But he gave me a look and off we went. We got home and I said, "Okay, what do we need?" Then, in the middle of the living room, he got down on one knee and told me how much he loved me and what a great mother I was. And then he pulled out a ring! A silver band with a row of diamonds going halfway around it! I cried and cried and he smiled and said he was hoping for that reaction. When we got back to our son, my mother-in-law admitted she was in on the whole thing. To top it off we had a super Mother's Day breakfast in a restaurant in which Dad and Grandpa fed the baby while my mom-in-law and I pigged out! It was great! --adrianeduquenne

Family Heirloom

My most special Mother's Day was my very first one when my daughter was almost 4 months old. We had everyone over for Mother's Day lunch and celebrated my birthday at the same time. My mother gave me her emerald-and-diamond ring and told me that she is passing it on to me on my first Mother's Day. I get to enjoy the ring and when my daughter Victoria has her first Mother's Day I will pass it on to her. --ToriJoshMommyplus1

Cell-Phone Surprise

I'm not a mom yet, but I have a beautiful stepdaughter that I adore. We only get to see her seven times a year because she lives about 10 hours away, so when my husband and I got married, I definitely did not feel like a mom. Well, the Mother's Day after we got married went by uneventfully. But the next day when I got in my car, my cell phone beeped to tell me I had a voice mail. My sweet stepdaughter, who was then 3, left a message saying "Happy mommy's day, I love you!" It was so sweet I started bawling. Then the next day I received an overnight package that had a Mother's Day card and her drawings all over it! It was so sweet and I'm so thankful that her mother helped her do that to make everything so wonderful! --lil1ontheway

Our Own Holiday

Last year on Mother's Day, my mother and I went shopping and "the baby" bought a present and flowers for me! It was so cute. It was my first Mother's Day as a mom, so it was truly special to me. I really understood how much joy a mother can receive from having children! Mothers deserve their own holiday! --*Steph*

In the Eyes of God

Last year was my very first Mother's Day as a new mom. It was an extra special day not only for me, but for our entire family because our daughter was dedicated to the Lord in a special Mother's Day infant dedication ceremony at our church. --Hayley's Mama

Daddy's Little Girl

Last year was my first Mother's Day with my daughter. She was 2 days old and we got to leave the hospital that day. I fell asleep and when I woke up, her daddy had put an outfit on her that said "I Love Mommy." That's when it hit me that she was really my little girl forever. --Candence

Words of Love

Before my daughter was born, I mentioned to my husband that I would like to have a mother's necklace someday. But after I had my daughter, I quit my job to become a stay-at-home mom and money was tight. I wasn't sure if he was still thinking about getting me the necklace but I mentioned that because of our money situation, the necklace could wait. On Mother's Day morning he told me my daughter had a gift to give me. It was the necklace that I had always wanted. He got the largest pendent and changed the birthstone to a diamond. It is absolutely stunning. And what surprised me even more is that my husband wrote me a very touching letter written by him from my daughter. I was in tears because it was so special and very much a surprise. --mommy@home

Lucky and Proud

Last year on Mother's Day my son was one week old. We all went out to dinner -- my mom and dad, my husband, my son, and I. I just remember feeling so lucky to be a mommy and proud to be with my baby boy. There is no feeling in the world like being a mother! --BTHmommy

Weed Bouquet

I remember one Mother's Day we had these weeds growing along the fence by our house. My 6-year-old mind thought they were beautiful flowers. So I picked a handful of those awful blooms and presented them to my mommy for Mother's Day. My little heart swelled with pride when my mother told me, with the biggest smile, how beautiful they were and that it was the best mother's day gift she ever got. She displayed them in her best vase for everyone to see. That was over 30 years ago, and it is still fresh in my mind. She's gone now, but memories of her are etched in my heart forever and always. --Alexander's Grandma

Sunday Best

My family isn't real big on presents for holidays other than Christmas. Growing up we were very poor so buying things for Mother's Day or Father's Day was never an option. A few years ago my mom was feeling a little down because her church does something special for mothers on Mother's Day, and my mom was not looking forward to wearing the same old thing. So I took it upon myself to get her a new outfit. I looked for a long time and finally found a great outfit, though I had to guess her size. Well, she loved the outfit and it fit perfectly! And Sunday morning she was so proud -- I've never been happier. I probably owe her a couple hundred new dresses for everything she's done for me! --deverno

Yard Work

Every year, my dad would take us kids shopping for Mother's Day and offer suggestions for what Mom might like. Well Mother's Day being in May and Dad being a guy, he always suggested lawn maintenance items! We were all under 8 and still thought our parents knew everything, so we took Dad's advice wholeheartedly. My poor mother got garden hoses, sprinklers, and hose attachments. One year she even got a yard of topsoil delivered the day before Mother's Day! But she always acted as though it was the best gift ever, and we kids were always so excited to give Mom exactly what she "wanted"! It sounds funny, but I can't wait until one of my kids gives me an equally thoughtful, but misguided, gift so I can tell them how much I love it and see that excited look on their faces! --Ethans_mommy

Lunch Money

When I was 11 I skipped lunch and saved my lunch money for a week. I went to the store and bought my mom some lipstick, a jewelry box, and a cute faux-pearl bracelet. I was so nervous giving it to her because I thought she might not like it. But she still has the bracelet and even saved the box. --MadPreggie

Favorite Teachers

I'm not a mom yet, but my favorite Mother's Day was my first year of teaching art. I was in an elementary school, and that week we were making paper flowers and cards for the children's mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers. Friday, before the end of day, one of the second-graders came into my room with his hands behind his back. He came to me and placed a card and a small candy bar on my desk without saying a word. The construction paper card had flowers drawn on the front with "Happy Mother's Day" written on it. I opened it and inside it said "I love you! I love art! You are my favorite teacher!" It was my first Mother's Day present, and I still have it to this day. --kiki2003

The Best Gift of All

My due date is May 14th. The best Mother's Day gift would be to have my son on Mother's Day. --jessicapetway
