You Have to See the Sweet Bond Between This Boy With Autism and His Deaf Dog
Six-year-old Connor, who is non-verbal, and Ellie the boxer, who is deaf and responds to sign language, are a match made in heaven.
Dogs are man's best friend, so the saying goes. In our house, our dog is our kids' best friend, too. Just this past weekend when all three were sick with a tummy bug, our 4-year-old rescue beagle never left their side, the sight of which truly warmed my heart.
Florida mom Brandi Guillet is also very grateful for her rescue animal, Ellie, a 3-year-old Boxer who is deaf and has been trained to respond to sign language. That's because her 6-year-old adopted son Connor, who has autism and is non-verbal, is a changed boy since meeting his furry best friend.
"Boxers are known to be great with kids but there is definitely something special about Ellie," Guillet told Today.com. "When Connor has tantrums she will stand over him as if to comfort him. When he is upset, Connor will immediately go to Ellie for comfort."
Guillet recently posted a sweet photo of Connor and Ellie cuddling on Facebook along with a deeply-touching description of their bond. It reads in part, "She is amazing with my son. She is the most gentle, loving girl ever. The most BEAUTIFUL part of this adoption is my son and his dog can actually talk to each other!"
The thankful mama says that Ellie being deaf doesn't make her harder to care for. "It's just a little different to get her attention than it is with other dogs," she told Today.com, adding, "And she is super smart. Anyone who can sign can communicate with a deaf dog."

According to Guillet, even Connor's teachers have noticed improvements in him. And studies have shown that therapy animals are known to help kids with autism with social skills. Besides, what is the downside of having a cuddly, sweet animal that shows you unconditional love?
