Placenta is 'Designed' to work in a One Baby One Placenta kind of configuration. This makes Dichorionic Diamniotic ('DiDi' in the US, 'DCDA' in the UK & AUS/NZ) the safest kind of twins gestation there is, with a mere 30% more Risk than Singleton gestation. Monochorionicity, in which 2 Identical Twin babies share one single placenta, comes in Two Flavors: Monochorionic Diamniotic "MoDi / MCDA" being the most common, Classified as High Risk with an average mortality of 10.3% in the US, & 11.6% in the UK. Also there is the much rarer Monochorionic Monoamniotic "MoMo / MCMA" gestation, these are classified as Extreme Risk with an average Mortality of ~29% in the US in the UK. Average Mortality for Singleton gestations stands at about 0.7% in US & UK, and for DiDi's at around 0.9%, again in both Dominions. If you find these Orders of Magnitude differences startling, you should. MIsrecognizing Chorionicity, & therefore the gestational Sono Surveillance Protocol called for to optimize safety in that gesation, can be a death sentence for it.
