Saturday brought a highly-anticipated arrival to the celebrity baby world--the superstar couple Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z welcomed their daughter at Lenox Hill Hospital on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The arrival was more than a month before the couple's previously revealed due date, PEOPLE.com reported. The baby and mother are both reportedly doing well.
After some confusion over the order of her name, sources confirmed Sunday that the baby's name is Blue Ivy Carter. The unusual name's meaning is explained by Parents.com's In Name Only blogger, Pamela Redmond Satran:
Inspired by nature, Ivy is an old-fashioned name that's starting to make a comeback after a century-long nap. US Weekly reports that the couple chose "Ivy" because of the significance of the number "4"³ or "IV," in their lives. Beyoncé and Jay-Z were born on Sept. 4 and Dec. 4, respectively, were married on April 4, 2008, and Beyoncé's latest album is entitled 4.
Both the names Blue and Ivy may have musical antecedents. A film about jazz singer Billie Holiday's life was called Lady Sings the Blues and another early jazz singer was Ivy Anderson.
