Last month, Nickelodeon shared news sure to excite parents who grew up in the '90s and early '00s: Blue's Clues is getting a reboot! The show about an animated puppy and her owner was hosted by Steve Burns from 1996-2002, and then by Donovan Patton, who played Steve's brother Joe. But for the revival, Nickelodeon apparently wants a "refreshed" look for Blue's Clues 2.0, which could mean going in a completely different direction with the host.
In fact, the cable network is having an open casting call on April 14 in Burbank, California, and People reports that last week, at the Nickelodeon Upfronts, professional WWE wrestler-turned-actor John Cena auditioned for the part in front of a crowd.
Hard to say if that means Cena has it in the bag. It looks like just about anyone could be the new host! Even OG host Steve Burns! The former host reportedly would like his job back.
“It seems to me that Blue’s Clues is returning now because somehow, all of the kids that I befriended way back when have kids,” Burns told TMZ. “From everything we understand about it, the millennial generation is extra super-duper nostalgic, and to think that they have such warm, fond memories of Blue’s Clues—and of me—is truly super cool and wonderful and warm and fuzzy.”
Very true! And it's not only the "warm, fond memories" of his days on the show that he thinks qualify him for the role. “I like the idea that the host of Blue’s Clues could be a regular-looking guy,” Burns continued. “You know, I didn’t look like Justin Bieber or anything like that. I was just kind of a normal, weird dude. And I like the idea that the host of that show really could be your friend, really could be someone who you might meet—and who isn’t like a super buff, amazing professional wrestler."
He went on to joke, "I think if John Cena is serious about hosting Blue’s Clues, he and I should wrestle for it. I’m calling you out, John Cena!”
Well, who knew casting the Blue's Clues revival would get this wild and crazy? Can't wait to see how it all pans out.
