Glamour Girl

Ages 5 and up

Invitations, Activities & Goodies

This high-style party is always in fashion. Little ladies will have a ball dressing up, making their own jewelry, and doing a mock photo-shoot.

Stylish Invitations

Use glitter markers to write party details on tags. Using silver thread, tie tags to bejeweled sunglasses. (To save money, decorate inexpensive cardboard sunglasses with glitter paint.) Have guests wear their shades to the party.

Glamour Relay Race

Have two teams race to dress up in selected sets of accessories. Once they're dressed, let the girls race down a "runway," pose for a Polaroid, and run back for the next girl's turn. The first team to finish wins. Girls can also decorate frames glitter-style to hold their Polaroids.

Foam Bracelets

Making our craft-foam and wrapped-yarn bracelets is a fun -- and quiet -- activity.

What you need:

  • Craft foam sheets
  • Paper edgers
  • Craft foam shapes
  • Glue
  • Self-adhesive
  • Velcro strips

To make:

Using paper edgers, cut craft foam into strips large enough to circle a child's wrist. Layer and glue craft-foam shapes on top of bands. Once glue dries, add self-adhesive Velcro strips to ends.

Yarn Bracelets

Making our craft-foam and wrapped-yarn bracelets is a fun -- and quiet -- activity.

What you need:

  • 2" gauge paper-wrapped floral wire (available at craft stores)
  • Wire cutters
  • Yarn in various colors
  • Colored beads
  • Craft glue

To make:

Cut floral wire into lengths sized to fit a child's wrist. Wrap two pieces of different-colored yarn around floral wire to form stripes. Wrap ends of yarn over and around ends of floral wire, then glue. While glue is still wet, slide bead onto tip of yarn-covered wire and let dry. Bend into desired shape.

What you need:

  • Flower and dragonfly Stiffened Eazy Felt Shapes by Consumer Products Enterprises
  • Fabric glue
  • Yarn
  • Low-temperature glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Fabric stiffener (optional)

To make:

Using fabric glue, layer flower and dragonfly shapes as desired and let dry. Using glue gun, attach shapes to length of yarn, and hang. If you can't find precut shapes that fit your party's theme, cut your own shapes from felt, then stiffen shapes by applying fabric stiffener, if desired.

Hair Clips and More

Buy buttons, beads and plain hair clips or inexpensive headbands. Have girls glue items onto their clips or headbands (be sure to use a glue that's safe for kids). Let them dry and set during cake time and then give the children time to adorn their hair with their new accessories.

Snap-a-Photo Booth

Create a photo booth in your home. Let the kids dress up, apply funny makeup and concoct hairdos. Take Polaroid photos in groups of three in a narrow area closed off by a drape or shower curtain. Part of the silliness is squeezing three people into a tight space.

Pampered-Princess Goody Bag

Attach sparkly hair clips or elastics, pretty costume jewelry, glittery lip glosses, and minibrushes to puffy pink bath sponges. If you'd like to indulge your guests, tie the sponges to bottles of bubble bath.

This pretty in purple sparkle cake will be a crowd pleaser at your baby shower.

Very Violet Sparkle Cake

This pretty sparkle cake -- adorned with Necco Wafers dipped in a colorful sugar mix -- will be a sure hit with your groovy girls.

Prep and decorating time: 1 hour

Bake time: 30 to 35 minutes

Yield: 12 servings

  • 1 box (18.25 oz.) cake mix, any flavor
  • 2 cans (12 oz. each) soft whipped fluffy-white frosting
  • Violet paste food color
  • Assorted small lollipops
  • Purple and pink sugars
  • Purple and pink Necco Wafers
  • Long, thin candles
  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease two 9" round cake pans. Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Transfer to wire rack; cool 15 minutes. Invert cakes onto rack; cool completely.
  2. Spoon 1 cup frosting into pastry bag fitted with ½" star tip. In medium bowl, tint remaining frosting with violet paste to desired color. Level top of cakes. Place 1 cake layer on serving plate; spread with ½ cup violet frosting. Top with remaining cake layer. Spread sides and top of cake with violet frosting.
  3. Dip lollipop tops in water, shake off excess, and roll in colored sugars. Place on plastic wrap, sugared side up, to dry. Repeat process with purple Neccos and sugar.
  4. Randomly pipe stars of white frosting onto sides and top of cake. Gently push Necco Wafers, sugar side out, into white stars. Place lollipops and candles in center of cake.
