Nature scavenger hunts are so much fun! They provide us with just the excuse we need to explore and be out in nature. Every spring once the weather is nice, I've sent the kids outdoors to do a nature scavenger hunt. The kids always come back with great finds!
The first year I created a very open-ended scavenger hunt (find something thin, something brown, something brittle, something rough). Below my daughter is showing "something white" and "something with a hole in it."

Another year, I created a scavenger hunt that was more challenging. The kids had to find things like onion grass & purple flowers. They had to spot two different types of birds and an animal's home. This one is more suitable near a creek or pond because the kids had to find live critters like a frog, toad, or salamander and a water skeeter. Again, you can click on this Nature Scavenger Hunt link or the photo below to download this free!
If your kids enjoy photography, they might enjoy trying to take as many photos as they can from the checklist below. We haven't done this for a couple of years and my youngest loves taking pictures on my phone. We'll give this a try in the next couple of weeks! You can also download this photo hunt printable free at the same post as the scavenger hunts above.
This year when I was thinking about our annual scavenger hunt (and writing this post!), I thought how much fun the kids would have doing a treasure hunt with the QR Code Reader on the phone. I created a Outdoor Treasure Hunt with QR Codes. (This is a free app that you can download onto your phone or tablet.) I tried to think of common things that we all have in our yards and around our homes. There are 4 pages of clues to choose from (check the swing, check the patio table, check the trash bin, etc.). Just pick out the clues that work around your home and set up a hunt for the kids to follow. If you don't have a QR Code reader, I also have the text if that works better. You will find that free printable here: Outdoor Treasure Hunt Printable
I hope you have fun with your kids!
