Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean and wife Rochelle welcomed their new daughter this week—and she shares her initials with her famous dad: Ava Jaymes McLean.
This former chart-topper went for a first name that's topping the charts as well—Ava's the fifth most popular name in the U.S., and it's still on the rise. (And maybe this A.J. will help put it in the top spot!) It's a variant of Eve, and simply means "life." Ava's been chosen by a boatload of other celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Jackman and Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora.
Jaymes is a variant spelling of James, a name that's traditionally gone to the boys. It means "supplanter," and is currently in the top 20 for boys. But it's become increasingly popular as a girls' name, especially when used in the middle spot. In fact, Jessica Capshaw chose James as the middle name for her daughter Poppy earlier this year.
I have to admit that I really like the idea of giving your child the same initials as you have—especially when they're initials you use publically, as A.J. does. It's a subtle way to carry on a family tradition, without carbon copying your own name. It's worth trying as a strategy, especially if your family has a name that's passed down and you and your mate aren't thrilled to make your son Milton Bradley IV.
What do you think of A.J.'s baby name choice? Too common for a celebrity, or a name you'd be interested in copying?
