Babies Safety Is it safe for my baby to twitch sometimes? By Parents Editors Published on July 2, 2015 Share Tweet Pin Email Q: Please let me know. Thanks! A: It is completely normal for newborns and young infants to jerk or twitch from time to time, it happens as part of the baby's normally developing nervous system. The episodes should only last a few seconds and may be more pronounced if the baby is startled or upset. If the events last more than a few seconds or do not stop when you put you hand gently on the part that is twitching you should schedule a visit with your pediatrician as it may be something more concerning, such as a seizure. Before the visit make a video on your cell phone if possible to show the doctor exactly what your baby is doing that is concerning to you as often the child will not do in the office what they have been doing at home and a picture (video) is worth a thousand words in this situation.
