PSA: Bar Refaeli got pregnant mere months after welcoming a baby and you can too. The fact that the model is expecting again isn't shocking...but is it healthy?

March 31, 2017

Fans were shocked when supermodel Bar Refaeli announced her pregnancy a few days ago—Bar just gave birth to her first baby in August, and if she's at the three-month mark right now, that means she likely got pregnant less than five months after giving birth.

Bar didn't get a ton of time to recover from one pregnancy before diving straight into the next, but we're not quite sure why people are so surprised to hear her news. Back-to-back pregnancies are not unheard of, and conceiving again so soon after giving birth is definitely not impossible or even that rare.

Then again, there are plenty of misconceptions that exist where getting pregnant after baby are concerned. For one thing, people believe that breastfeeding is a reliable form of birth control—and we hate to break it to you, but it's not—you can still get pregnant while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can drastically reduce your odds of conceiving if your baby is under six months old and your periods haven't resumed, but it is still possible.

That brings us to another point: Mamas may not be aware that their periods are about to make comebacks and have unprotected sex...only to find they conceived on the verge of getting their first postpartum periods.

Here's a statistic: Second babies often are unplanned...and they can usher in some complications. Mamas who conceive soon after giving birth may be upping their odds of developing anemia or preeclampsia and delivering small or premature babies.

That's not to say women can't get pregnant shortly after giving birth and have perfectly healthy pregnancies (it happens every day, actually!), but you may want to talk to your doctor about this—it might be a good idea to give your body a year to recover from one pregnancy before getting on with the next.

So there you have it: Bar's back-to-back pregnancies may have surprised her fans, but there's no reason to be surprised by her news. After all, don't you know siblings who are very close in age? It's a small window, for sure, but two pregnancies within a short time frame happen more often than you might expect.
