This Scary Story Is a Powerful PSA About Car Seat Safety
Every parent knows how time-consuming, cumbersome and, quite frankly, frustrating practicing perfect car seat safety can be. Wrangling a fussy baby into place and making sure everything is fastened properly can even take longer than the actual car ride sometimes—and it's only human to feel tempted to forgo part of that process when we're running a quick errand or are in a big rush.
But one mom just put out a powerful warning that car seat safety is essential every time you get in the car. Jenna Casado Rabberman and her kids were just grabbing milk on their way home when something terrifying happened: Another car hit them. Rabberman and her family were right near their home when this happened.
"THIS is why you buckle your kids into their car seats correctly every SINGLE time. Even when they scream because the straps are tight. Even when they complain about the chest clip or being rear facing," the mom wrote alongside a photo of her car and car seats after the crash. "You never think it will happen to you. My boys escaped without a scratch but the paramedics told me it could have been very different had I not taken the extra 2 minutes to be sure they were buckled correctly. I will be fine, my kids are fine, everything else can be replaced. Sending thanks to God for keeping us safe."
This is such an important topic, and we all need to keep in mind that tragic accidents can happen at any time, anywhere. A recent study published in Traffic Injury Prevention even highlights the fact that accidents (and even fatalities) can occur in non-traffic settings like parking lots and driveways.
"I almost didn't post this photo online because it makes me sick to look at it. But I decided that if seeing this made one person think twice about how they were (or weren't) buckling their child in then it would be worth it. I only intended [for] it to be seen by family and friends but made it public when someone asked to share it. I never imagined It would speed so quickly!" Rabberman told Parents.com.
"My hope is that parents will see my message and realize that something like this could happen to anyone at any moment. It didn't matter that we were minutes from home. It didn't matter that I am confident that I'm a safe driver. In that moment all that mattered was that I took the time to do everything in my power to make sure my kids were safe," the mom added.
It just goes to show, you can never be too careful....even when you're just running out for some milk.
