Every now and then, women have learned that they're expecting way late in the game. Like third trimester late. That's how it went down for Tia Freeman, whose Twitter thread about her unexpected pregnancy—and self-delivery!—is now going viral. Freeman took to the social media site to explain how she learned that she didn't learn she was pregnant until well into the nine months, and on March 7, she used YouTube to help her deliver her own baby. Thank goodness for the internet!
Freeman told SELF that she noticed she was developing a round belly around mid-January. "This was the first indication that I may be pregnant," she shared, adding that she gained less than 20 pounds during the entire pregnancy. “I didn’t even begin to notice [any weight gain] until around December, but because I hadn’t been to the gym in forever I thought that was pretty typical and didn’t think anything of it."
She was "in denial," had already bought tickets to fly to Germany, and decided to go through with the trip. But she started to have cramps on the flight. “I just knew I had food poisoning. Y’all I was HURT,” she tweeted. Freeman went on to share in her tweets that she decided to try to sleep it off, but when she woke up and went through customs in Istanbul, Turkey due to a 17-hour layover, the cramps were worse.
"I’m literally gripping the railing trying to make it through the lines,” she wrote on her Twitter thread. “At this point I feel like I’m about to pass out. I’m sweating. I feel like I have to vomit. I’m going through it. Then I’m like wait a minute bitch are you in labor?!!!”
The mom-to-be got to her hotel in Istanbul, but upon realizing that she may have to deal with a language barrier and was concerned about how her "insurance would work overseas" and "the fact that [the baby] was coming too quickly," she made the decision to give birth at her hotel. And to use YouTube for assistance.
“I don’t have time to be nervous. It’s time to get shit done,” she elaborated. “I spring into action. Filling up the tub with warm water #WaterBirth, grabbing a towel to bite down on, grabbing another towel to wrap him/her up with whenever it pops out.”
It didn't take long, as she was already so far along in the labor.
After that, she delivered the placenta, cut the umbilical cord by clamping it using her shoelaces and cutting it with a knife she carried, both of which she sterilized in hot water using an electric kettle in the hotel room. She proceeded to breastfeed her baby, clean up the bathroom, and just go to sleep—not to the hospital.
Upon attempting to fly out, Freeman had to provide documentation for her L.O., which led to a trip to the hospital, where both she and her baby boy Xavier were examined and found to be perfectly healthy.
So, all's well that ends well in this wild ride of a pregnancy and birth story!
“I think our time by ourselves in Turkey really allowed us to bond,” she told SELF. “We’re just getting to know each other more and more every day. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. Being a mom has its challenges, but looking at his face is so rewarding.”
Congratulations to the new mom and her baby boy!
