Despite what every movie and Hallmark commercial would have us believe, not every parent bonds with their baby the minute he or she is born.
Kevin Jonas—who has a 2-year-old daughter named Alena and is currently expecting a second child with wife Danielle—opened up about the fact that he initially had a hard time finding his place with his firstborn in an interview for Oprah's Where Are They Now.
"Don't be surprised if you don't connect as a father right away," he began. "That's the one thing.... No one ever talked to me about it."
But they should. Because couple that with the unrealistic expectations many of us first-timers bring to the table, and it's not hard to see why so many new parents wind up feeling inadequate.
"You see every picture of a dad, like, sleeping on the couch with the baby on them and all this stuff," Jonas said.
But Jonas admits that he couldn't really embrace those kinds of Instagram-worthy moments in the beginning, because he wasn't really sure what his role was supposed to be.
"I knew baby girl [Alena] needed Mom and that was great," he said. "So I kind of dove into work because I was not fully finding my place yet. And I think that a lot of guys...just don't realize how much of an effect it has."
We just love that Kevin is being so real about his struggle!
Today, of course, the proud papa says he's all-in when it comes to parenting his little girl. "I'm in such a good place with her," he said. "It's just so amazing."
Awww! And now he's finally settled in, Jonas has some advice for all the other dads out there who are floundering instead of fully embracing fatherhood:
"There's a shock-and-awe factor, for sure," he explains. "But just remember to take every day. You're not going to get that day back."
