Remember Dana and Arkell Graves? They're the couple whose heartwarming "bun in the oven" pregnancy announcement went viral last year, thanks in part to Arkell's raw and emotional response. The dad-to-be busted out in tears after hearing the news—a reaction that's hardly surprising given the fact that Dana had previously suffered four miscarriages and a stillbirth.
But less than a month after the big reveal, the Graves' baby boy Kaleb was born 17 weeks early on Oct. 20, 2015, weighing less than a pound. He needed heart surgery, had fluid drained from around his brain, and suffered from chronic lung disease that required him to be intubated. But on Tuesday, almost one year later, Kaleb—or "Baby Bun" as the couple calls him—was finally released from the NICU.
"At this very moment, all of my men are asleep under the same roof," Arkell wrote in a Facebook post yesterday. "Some days I really didn't think that would happen. During this last year I've had some emotional trying times. I questioned my judgment, I questioned my faith and I questioned God."
I don't blame her one bit. My daughter was born eight weeks early and spent a month living in the NICU. Those four weeks away from our little girl were pure torture. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like for the Graves to go home every night for nearly a year without their sweet baby boy.
Now, after a miraculous journey, the little guy is home in time to celebrate his first birthday next week. The Graves posted a video of a sleeping Kaleb wearing adorable baby blue graduation cap on his head on the ride home from the hospital—in a limo!
"This is what we've prayed for," they said. "We believe God will give us an unending supply of strength to handle any situation."
The couple has also promised to keep Kaleb's many fans updated on his progress, so if you'd like the follow along, please visit the Arkell & Dana's Baby Bun Facebook page.
