The Russian pet form of Sophia that's been used independently since the early 1900s. Norwegian figure skater Sonja Henie, who was a three-time Olympic champion during the 1920s and 1930s before moving on to a successful film career, used the German form. Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky used Sonya for one of the main characters in his 19th century novel, "Crime and Punishment." Currently a royal name for Queen Sonja of Norway, the consort of King Harald V.
