Oz-Worthy Baby Names
Anyone else excited to see Oz the Great and Powerful? There may not be a girl in a blue gingham pinafore, but there will be flying monkeys, munchkins, and all the other wild and weird inhabitants of that magical world.
But Oz, in its many incarnations, can provide us with some great baby name inspiration. Consider these options, drawn from the original movie, the blockbuster Broadway musical Wicked, and the latest, Oz the Great and Powerful.
Finley is a new character in the Oz-ian universe, played by actor Zach Braff. It means fair-haired hero and was traditionally a boy's name, but it's now being taken over by the ladies. (Our pregnancy blogger opted for it for her daughter.) It's currently midrange in popularity for both boys and girls, but expect to see it climbing the charts for girls.
Dorothy is the heroine of the original movie, and her name means gift from God. it's a name that's on a slight uptick, after almost disappearing from the top 1000 baby names – it's a great choice if you like some of the old-fashioned names that are making a comeback, like Matilda and Florence.
Theodora is the name given to the Wicked Witch of the West in Oz the Great and Powerful. It's the feminine version of Theodore, another name that means gift from God. This name has practically vanished for girls, but it has some beautiful nicknames, including Thea and naturally, Dora.
In Wicked, Elphaba is the name given to the future Wicked Witch. It's a variant on Elizabeth, which coincidentally also means gift from God. It's a super unique name, and it would likely be obvious where you got your baby name inspiration.
Glinda is the name used for the good witch of the North. Glinda, a variant spelling on Glenda, had a quick blip on the popularity screen right after the movie came out, through the 40s and 50s. Glenda is a Welsh name that means fair and good – obviously the perfect choice for the bubbly pink witch.
Evanora is a feminized version of Evan, a Welsh name that means the Lord is gracious. Evan is near the top 10 baby names in the US for boys – perhaps its popularity could help boost Evanora's as well.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Henry, the name of Dorothy's uncle. It's a Germanic name that means strong ruler, and it's inching its way toward the top 50 names in the US.
