Cool Name of the Week: Louisa 28210

It takes a special kind of show to make you root for a guy who is a serial killer. But that's exactly what Showtime's Dexter manages. Even after seven years' worth of Dexter taking out his darkest impulses on any of the local Miami scum who manage to slip through the hands of his employer, Miami's incredibly busy homicide department, you still want to see him keep on getting away with it. (Even as it seems to get harder and harder for him to avoid getting nabbed—especially now that someone very close to him is in on the secret.)

And apparently, I'm not alone in my fascination with one of TV's awesomest anti-heroes—and his slightly nerdy (but now much cooler by association) moniker. In the years since the show hit the airwaves, it's gone from near the bottom of the top 1000 list to number 384—and it's still on the rise.

The name Dexter is a Latin name that means right-handed, and it's been used by more cool characters than just Dexter Morgan. There's Cary Grant's ultra-suave CK Dexter Haven in the classic Philadelphia Story (he's the guy who got the fabulous girl—the bold Tracy Lord, played by Katharine Hepburn), and the hero in F. Scott Fitzgerald's Winter Dreams. It's a name that's been used for several celebrity babies, including Elvis Costello and Diana Krall's son, and actress Diane Keaton's daughter.

And what should you pair with the dynamic Dex? Try William, Leo, or even Truth—all perfect with this name.

What do you think of the name Dexter? Would it be a name that you'd consider for your son (or your daughter)? And what do you think about naming your child after a less-than-angelic character?
