Miranda is a lovely name that means "marvelous," and is currently in the top 200 names in the country. It was featured in Shakespeare's play The Tempest, which makes it a perfect choice for a kid who will likely have performing in her blood. In more recent pop culture, it's often given to characters with strong personalities, such as Miranda Hobbs, the sleek lawyer in Sex and the City's fab four, or Miranda Priestly, the imperious editrix (and thinly disguised fictional representation of Vogue's Anna Wintour) in The Devil Wears Prada. Scarlett has been on a huge surge—it's currently #80 in popularity in the U.S., thanks to two fabulously feisty women who sport the name, actress Scarlett Johansson and Gone With the Wind heroine Scarlett O'Hara.
Chad Lowe's daughter was given one of my current favorite names, Fiona, a Scottish name that means "fair," and is currently on an uptick here in the U.S. It's still low enough on the charts (#267), that odds are your daughter will be the only one in her class with that name—though singer Fiona Apple, the character Fiona Gallagher on TV's Shameless, and Princess Fiona from the Shrek films may help propel it higher on the charts. Hepler is Chad's mother's maiden name (and it's also the middle name of Chad's brother, Rob Lowe).
What do you think of the latest pair of Hollywood baby names? Would Fiona or Miranda be a name you'd pick for your daughter?
