Kara DioGuardi 28344

It's a boy for former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi and her husband Mike McCuddy. Their gestational surrogate gave birth to their son earlier this week—a boy they've named Greyson James.

Greyson is an alternative spelling of Grayson, a rising star among boys' names—Greyson is currently #200 in popularity here in the U.S., and Grayson is #97. I'm thinking it's going to be the next decade's Aiden/Brayden/Jayden, alongside powerhouse Mason, given its sharp spike in popularity. I'm thinking there's several pop culture influences that might be fueling its meteoric rise: its use as a surname for a powerful family on nighttime sudser Revenge, as Courteney Cox's mate in Cougar Town, and of course, the overwhelming popularity of mom-porn hero Christian Grey from 50 Shades of Grey.

James is popular as a first name, but also incredibly popular as a middle name, where it's been used for both boys and girls lately. (See the daughters of Backstreet Boys' A.J. McLean and Grey's Anatomy's Jessica Capshaw for two examples of girls with the middle name James.) James means "supplanter," and it's currently in the top 20 names for boys.

What do you think of Kara and Mike's baby name choice? If you like the Gray/Grey names, would you go for the American "ay" spelling, or the Anglicized "ey"?
