We love the unique name given to the long-awaited baby of April the giraffe.
After what was perhaps the most-watched animal pregnancy ever, April the giraffe finally gave birth to her calf on April 15, as we all (finally) found out. He weighed in at 129 pounds, and stood 5 feet, 9 inches tall! And now, a name has been chosen for the highly-anticipated "little" guy.
The decision comes after a contest to choose a moniker for the mammal. Fans were invited to submit nominations online, and donate to the Animal Adventure Park in upstate New York. Included in the top 10 names was a one that would be chosen by April's handler, Alyssa, as well as:
I might have voted for Geoffrey in homage to the Toys 'R Us mascot, or maybe Ollie, which pays tribute to the calf's dad Oliver, but as was announced on Facebook and Twitter, Alyssa's choice won, and she selected the name "Tajiri," which is Swahili meaning "hope" and "confidence."

We love the name Tajiri because it's unique and has a lovely and poignant meaning behind it. After all, one had to have hope that after a seemingly never-ending wait, April would finally give birth! But just like all human pregnancies that feel like they stretch on forever, this one did come to an end. And now, Tajiri is here, growing already.
Congrats to April, Oliver, and their adorable baby. We have all the "confidence" in the world that Tajiri will be bringing joy to zoo-goers—and the entire Internet—for many, many years to come.
