How can I ensure good eating habits for my 3-year-old son?

Q: My son is 42 months old and he never says he is hungry. I have to feed him forcibly. What should I do?

A: For 3 year olds taking time to eat is often low on their priority list so parents need to help them stay fueled. Teaching them to feed on a regular schedule is a good way to help them manage hunger and develop an eating routine. Children who graze throughout the day don’t always recognize when they are hungry or full.  During meals, offer appropriate-sized portions, let your son ask for more, and let him stop eating when he seems “full” or uninterested. This will help him eat what he needs and know when he has had enough. (Answer by: Connie Diekman, R.D., Director of University Nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri)
