A: Methamphetamine usage during pregnancy can have a variety of negative effects on the child. Drug withdrawal following delivery is the first thing seen and often needs to be managed in the hospital with methadone until the child recovers from the withdrawal effects. As the children age they can have a variety of problems with learning and attention and need to have their development followed closely to be sure they get therapies for speech or motor issues if they fall behind what children are expected to do at that age. In the school age range attention and focus can be a problem and needs to be identified and treated if it is causing problems. Treatment may be as simple as an 504 Plan with seating closer to the teacher, a quiet place for testing, etc or they may need therapy and medication if severe.
