Can smoking one cigarette cause serious damage to my unborn child?

Q: Is smoking at 17 weeks harmful to my unborn baby?  I was very upset and decided to smoke one cigarette.  Now I feel really bad that I might have harmed my baby in any way.

A: No amount of smoking is 100% safe during pregnancy.  However, adverse effects from smoking are more cumulative effects from long-term exposure, not from one single exposure.  Don't worry, but don't make a habit of smoking during the remainder of your pregnancy.
