Can an STD harm my baby during pregnancy?

Q: I am 27 weeks along, and I have a sexually-transmitted disease.

A: This is a tough question to answer because there are so many different STDs, ranging from a vaginal infection with trichomonas to Hepatitis to HIV.  They all have some risk to the baby, but each one is different. It is best to talk to your practitioner about what you can do to treat your specific infection and/or decrease the risk of transmission (if any) to your baby.
