Q: I feel guilty about eating chips and dip and ice cream during pregnancy. Is this ok?
A: Pregnancy certainly is a time when your cravings go crazy! One day it's tangerines and the next day it's Taco Bell bean-and-cheese burritos with extra hot sauce (or was this just me during my pregnancies?!). Although pregnancy is a time when you should indulge a little, it is still up to you to provide good nutrition to your fetus. As long as you are getting good nutrition, it is ok to give in to your cravings occasionally. What some women make the mistake of doing is giving in to cravings all day long every day. Many of our studies now show that the nutrition a fetus receives in utero (while in the womb) sets up the health of that child through adulthood. These same studies show that many adult diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity can be linked to poor maternal nutrition. So, as long as you are taking your prenatal vitamins, eating all of your food groups (including fruits and vegetables), and drinking lots of water, don't feel bad about some ice cream here and there!
